About me

A German lawyer in Mallorca – why would I need one?

Admittedly, it is a fair question. There are plenty of Spanish and Mallorcan lawyers who could advise you and guide you through your affairs.

Often, however, what stands between the foreign client and the Spanish or Mallorcan lawyer is not just a language barrier, but also an unfamiliar legal system, different customs and procedures in legal matters and, not least, a different way of looking after clients. Please don't misunderstand me: my Spanish and Mallorcan colleagues are not worse – just different.

Purely linguistic problems could be solved with translators, as you often find in Mallorcan law firms. As for the unfamiliar law, the Mallorcan lawyer can give you information. And as for client care, you just need to know that in Spain it is customary to inform clients of the outcome only at the end of the mandate. The practice German clients are used to – receiving copies of all correspondence – is not only uncommon here in Spain, but actually breaches the applicable professional rules.

What do I do differently? I understand not only your language, but also your mindset – and that of the other side. I see myself not only as a lawyer, but also as a link that helps understand and bridge differences in culture and mindset.

I put myself in your position and work the way I would expect my own lawyer to work.

I look forward to hearing from you at: s.aertken@abogadosaertken.com
